The best time for a boat trip

Boats sail off the west coast of Barbados year-round, but the weather is not the same in March as in October. Here is what the official numbers say, and how to plan around them.

The short version is that Barbados has a dry season and a wet one, and the west coast stays calm enough for boats in both. What changes is how often a shower rolls through, how warm the sea is, and how much risk a tropical storm adds to your week.

The figures below come from the Barbados Meteorological Services' 1991 to 2020 averages, measured at the airport in Christ Church. Use them to pick a month and a day, then let the free cancellation on the listings cover the rest.

The quick answer

February, March and April are the driest months for a boat trip, with the fewest rain days. September to November are the wettest, and they sit inside the hurricane season. Whatever the month, book early in your stay so a weather day can be moved.

What is the best month for a boat trip in Barbados?

March, then February and April: the driest months, with about eight or nine rain days each on the official averages.

The Met Services climate data shows rainfall climbing from a low in March to a peak in October. A rain day in Barbados is often a short shower and sunshine either side, so the counts overstate the trouble, but the trend is clear.

When is the rainy season in Barbados?

Roughly June to November, with October the wettest month, then November and September.

Sources differ by a month on the edges, but the Met Services numbers speak for themselves: from June the rain days climb into the teens, and October averages the most rain of the year. Boats still sail. A tropical shower out at sea tends to arrive, soak the deck and move on, and the water stays warm.

Our post on boat trips in the rainy season covers how operators handle wet days. In short: if the forecast is poor, the crew decides, and the free cancellation window on the listings is 24 hours.

When is hurricane season in Barbados?

Officially 1 June to 30 November, with the peak from August to October, per the US State Department.

The State Department gives June to November as the season and August to October as the peak. A storm system nearby can stop boats for a day or two. The private catamaran listing spells out that weather can lead to postponement or cancellation with a refund, and each listing on this site showed free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

If you travel in those months, book the boat for the first half of your stay and keep an eye on the forecast. A trip moved is better than a trip missed.

Want a smaller boat whatever the month? The Oceanluxx cruise caps the numbers at 15, with a Bajan lunch and swim stops down the west coast.

Is the sea calmer in winter or summer in Barbados?

The west coast is sheltered all year. Winter brings stronger trade winds and, now and then, northerly swells that roughen the west coast for a few days.

The north-east trade winds are strongest from December to June, but they blow across the island from the Atlantic side, leaving the west coast in the lee. The exception is the swell. The Met Services issues advisories when northerly swells wrap around onto the west coast: one Government Information Service notice warned of choppy surf at Holetown, Paynes Bay and Speightstown over a March weekend, and another advisory covered the turn of the year in 2024. Those are the days a crew may move the stop or the date.

The sea itself is warm. Off Bridgetown it runs from about 26 to 28 C around late February to about 28 to 30 C around late August, per Surf Forecast. No wetsuit needed, in any month.

What is the best time of day for a boat trip in Barbados?

Morning to early afternoon for snorkelling and turtles, when the light is high and the water clearest. Late afternoon for the sunset and a dinner cruise.

Light makes the difference under water. High sun lights up the seabed, the wrecks and the reef; a low evening sun bounces off the surface. If turtles or the Carlisle Bay wrecks are the point, take a daytime boat. Visit Barbados also notes that snorkelling is safer when few boats are around, which favours the less crowded start or end of the day.

The evening trips do something different: a swim, food and the sunset. Our sunset cruise guide has sunset times by month.

Does sargassum affect boat trips in Barbados?

It can, in some years. Sargassum seaweed washes up on Barbados beaches in waves, mainly in the warmer months, and the government issues warnings when an influx is expected.

The Government Information Service has warned of sargassum influxes, citing a regional outlook and a large influx in June 2022. On a boat trip it matters less than on a beach day, since the crew picks the stop, but a beach swim stop can move if the sand is covered.

There is no reliable month-by-month forecast for Barbados. Check local news in the week before you go if you are planning a beach-heavy trip.

When is Barbados busiest with cruise ships?

In the winter cruise season, roughly late autumn to spring, when several ships can be in port on the same day and the shared boats fill up.

Bridgetown can berth up to six cruise ships at a time, and a new berth commissioned in 2026 was built to free others for winter cruise traffic, per Barbados Today. On a busy port day the boats near the terminal and the beach clubs of Carlisle Bay are at their fullest.

If you are staying on the island, sail on a day with fewer ships in, or pick a boat with a cap on numbers. Our cruise season post follows the 2026 to 2027 season.

How many days in Barbados do you need to fit in a boat trip?

Any stay of three days or more fits one comfortably. Book it for the first half of the stay, so a weather day can be moved.

One travel blog, Finding the Universe, suggests about five days to see the highlights of Barbados, a boat trip included. The bigger point is the order. A trip on day two can be moved to day four if the sea is rough; a trip on your last morning cannot. The private catamaran sails on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, so check the weekdays against your dates before you plan around it.

Health basics travel with you in any season. The UK's TravelHealthPro advises routine vaccines up to date and care against daytime mosquito bites; a yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a country with transmission risk.

Frequently asked questions

What months should you avoid for a boat trip in Barbados?

There is no month to avoid outright. September to November are the wettest and fall in the hurricane season, so keep your plans flexible then.

Is October a bad time for a Barbados boat trip?

October is the wettest month on the Met Services' 1991 to 2020 averages and sits inside the hurricane peak. Book early in your stay and use the 24-hour free cancellation if the forecast turns.

Is Barbados hot in December?

Warm rather than hot. The Met Services' mean temperature for December is about 26.6 C, with a mean maximum of about 29.6 C. The trade winds are blowing by then, and the west coast stays in their lee.

Are sandflies a problem in Barbados?

They come out at dusk, mainly on beaches. Reactions range from nothing to an itchy rash, per Barbados.org, and insect repellent keeps them off. Pack it for any sunset trip with a beach stop.
